The Mirror Spoke

(A rewrite)

I once knew a girl: she committed suicide when her boyfriend left her for a fashion plate.

Before she lost hope in life, she stood in front of her mirror one day. She took a serious look at herself. And what she saw was not a miracle. All she saw was a sad woman. All she saw was someone who was sad because she did not see Aishwarya Rai, Halle Berry or Salma Hayek in the mirror! What she saw was an ugly young woman. And that woman had no self confidence.

But then, she should have looked deeply into her own eyes in the mirror. She should have seen someone who was willing to change. She should have seen someone with possibilities. She should have seen this wonderful person. She should have seen a wonderful human being. A miracle of creation.

Had she listened carefully, she would have heard the mirror speaking:

“Before you, many a decent woman lived in this world. In her was the spirit that made life breathe. She was the zephyr that blew through times of peace. She created great monuments to the grandeur of humanity. She was the one that ended wars. She was the poetry that lightened hearts. She made music for the weary. She cared for the hurt, the downtrodden and the poor. She was the anthem of gold that uplifted her king. She made her man emperor. She glorified herself and her partner and her children. She was a woman!

Before you, many a sweet girl lived on this great earth. She created an honorable man out of a cad. She slipped delicately into a man’s consciousness and made him kind. She destroyed the beast in him. She created loving human spirits. She was, after all, the soul of life!

Before you lived many a wonderful woman. She took a man’s hand and walked with him. She led him to bed after a hard day’s work. She was always the first to wish him good morning. She was, after all, what made life complete.

Before you, in front of you, I place an invitation! Listen to me, my daughter reflection. Do you want to be a woman? Do you want to be the soul of life? Do you want to be the better half of a full life? If so, listen to me carefully!

Live life according to what you know to be right and wrong. Do not let yourself be dragged though the cheapness of smaller people. Follow your heart. Follow freedom. Follow peace. Follow love and not hate. Follow encouragement and not fear. Accept that you can sometimes mistakes. Be willing to correct your own mistakes. Above all, be yourself!

Do not judge yourself in glass, my daughter. Value yourself in what you can do. Walk away from this mirror now! Before you is an entire world of beauty, peace and happiness.”

If only she had listened to the voice in the mirror, she will still be with us today.

I want you to consider this: How about those wonderful people called teachers who dedicate their entire lives to help others make a life for themselves, often at great cost to their own lives? They give this kind of encouragement every day to so many. Not only do they not get the praise they deserve, but often get blamed for ‘not doing enough’! Let us use this opportunity to bless them here!
